winner, Ms. Oza will receive Mothers Day Brunch for five at
The Regency Banquet. Winners were chosen by a panel of
judges. The text of her winning essay follows:
My mom and how she made history in my life
The day seemed like any other, but not for my family. My
mom, diagnosed with a brain tumor underwent surgery, and at
that moment, I realized her legacy to me, my entire being.
The memories of all the moments we had spent together became
my most precious possession. That day, in the hospital,
although deeply sedated, she felt my presence as I drew
closer, raising her frail hand to hold mine, whispering
softly, but with a spark of light in her partly opened eyes.
My history flashed before my eyes. This was the hand that
protected me; the voice that gave me hope; the light that
guided me. My mom lay there, kissing me gently, as I stroked
her hair, and I knew she had made my world a place of love
and cherishing.
After
she came home from the hospital, she could not walk, or read
or even stand without losing balance. She had once taught me
to walk and it was time to return those moments. I was now
the hand that supported her, and picked her up again, as she
once was to me. I was the voice that gave her hope, when she
felt lost. I was the light that guided her through the dark.
Suddenly, I became her world. It is her pure heart that
defines her and she not only made my life as wonderful as it
could be, but she taught me the pleasure of giving back, of
being to her what she was to me.
Mumma is a part of my history that I want to keep repeating,
the part of me that makes my life really worth living.

Cottage Lane Shines in WordMasters Blue Division
Several
Cottage Lane students recently received perfect scores in
the second of three meets of this year’s WordMasters
Challenge, a national vocabulary competition involving
nearly 150,000 students annually.
Competing in the difficult Blue Division of the WordMasters
Challenge, fourth grader Mia P. and fifth grader Grace J.
earned perfect scores of 20 in the February meet.
Nationally, only 63 fourth graders and 75 fifth graders
achieved a perfect score.
The WordMasters
Challenge™ is an exercise in critical thinking that
first encourages students to become familiar with a set of
interesting new words (considerably harder than grade
level), and then challenges them to use those words to
complete analogies expressing various kinds of logical
relationships. Working to solve the analogies helps students
learn to think both analytically and metaphorically.
Although most vocabulary enrichment and analogy-solving
programs are designed for use by high school students,
WordMasters Challenge™ materials have been specifically
created for younger students in grades three through eight.
They are particularly well suited for children who are
motivated by the challenge of learning new words and enjoy
the logical puzzles posed by analogies.

SOCSD
Media Specialists Present at Tech Expo 2013
The
Tech Expo 2013 held at the Edith Macy Conference Center in
Briarcliff Manor, Friday, April 5, 2013 showcased innovative
teachers with a focus on transforming learning with
technology. South Orangetown Central School District School
Library Media Specialists Sheri Levasseur and Patricia Eyer
were among 35 breakout instructional sessions presenters.
Their
presentation, “Designing Apps” described how they introduced
South Orangetown Middle School students to coding programs
for handheld devices and computers. This lesson included a
birds eye view of the 21st Century workplace, culture, and
demands, and provided the foundation for understanding how
apps are created, modified, and built to create meaningful
tools that help society solve problems, interact, and
entertain. Computer programming is a science often
overlooked and misunderstood by creative thinkers. Through
several primary source accounts such as, Kerpoof and CodeHS,
provided by some of today’s most knowledgeable programmers,
students are introduced to the idea that anyone who can read
can code.

individual score earned him a seat among the top 12
competitors, out of approximately 275 students who
participated. This position qualified Tao for the countdown
round which is a tournament style round where students are
required to answer math questions in 45 seconds. Tao
finished a very respectable 10th in the State in the
countdown round.

Ben Sliney, National Operations Manager of the FAA on
September 11, 2001, who gave the unprecedented order to land
every plane in the air over the U.S. after two planes had
crashed into the twin towers of the World Trade Center,
effectively shutting down U.S. airspace. “The students’ hard
work and dedication to crafting this project was truly
exemplary and their film is now an alternate-nominee to
compete in the State Contest in late April,” commented
Robertson.
At the same competition, sixth grade SOMS students Brian C.

Three TZHS Seniors Named
National Merit Finalists
The
National Merit Scholarship Program has just announced
Finalist status to Tappan Zee High School seniors
Alexandria Nelson, David Rapoport, and Leon Zaruvinsky. The
National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic
competition for recognition and scholarships that began in
1955. High school students enter the Program by taking the
Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test
which serves as an initial screen of more than 1.5 million
entrants each year–and by meeting published program
entry/participation requirements.
All winners of Merit Scholarships are chosen from the
Finalist group, based on their abilities, skills, and
accomplishments–without regard to gender, race, ethnic
origin, or religious preference. A variety of information is
available for NMSC selectors to evaluate: the Finalist's
academic record, information about the school's curricula
and grading system, two sets of test scores, the high school
official's written recommendation, information about the
student's activities and leadership, and the Finalist's own
essay. Scholarship winners will be announced later this
year.

TZHS Students Attend Model UN Conference
From
January 17th - 20th, twelve TZHS students attended the Model
UN Conferences at Columbia University in New York City. Each
student had to research a particular position for one of
over thirty committees that were represented. At the
conferences, TZHS students turned in a remarkable
performance. They followed proper Model UN protocol and
debated passionately with fellow high school students from
all over the country as they learned to master the
intricacies of international relations. TZHS student Irena
Tampakis, who served in the South Korean Intelligence
Committee, faced the additional pressure of a "Midnight
Crisis." This is when students of a particular committee
must attend a special session at midnight to solve a
fictional crisis event that involves their particular
delegation. It is an intense evening of debate and
discussion amongst students as they try to seek a
resolution.
Junior Ellie Kitman received the title of Best Delegate for
her role in the Taiping Rebellion committee. Verbal
commendations at closing ceremonies went to Gus Brennan
(British East India Company committee) and Jaclyn Wecht

On January 4th, the 7th grade Geography Bee was held in the
SOMS auditorium. Winners from each individual class
competition assembled on the stage to vie for the title of
the overall 7th grade winner. Questions were posed to each
of the contestants by teachers Sarah Kukla and James

advisors for the 7th grade portion of the Geography Bee.
From the original 10 competitors, the winning answer came
from 7th grader Tadhg O’Riordan who will now be a

the Performance Index, meet AYP, and student growth needed
to be in the top 50% statewide, Also, the bottom quartile of
