SUMMER READING
The
SOCSD Libraries provide fiction and nonfiction books to
support student learning during the school year. It is time
to return all borrowed library books before the school year
ends. Please return all library books to the appropriate
building as soon as possible!
Summertime is fun time for readers of all ages! Browse
through the collections at your public libraries and “Dig
into Reading” this summer! Research clearly correlates the
amount of reading a student does over the summer to his or
her academic growth over the school year. We encourage all
students to read widely by reading non-fiction and/or
fiction books this summer.
Please refer to the summer reading requirements posted by
the district librarians.

SOMS
Student Wins National ThingLink Contest
SOMS 6th grade student Kevin
Huang has won the ThingLink Interactive Image Contest. The
Contest, open to all students K-12 nationally invites
students to connect audio, video, images, and text in one
cohesive presentation. Students dig deeper into content
through research to present knowledge and ideas as they
learn, practice and demonstrate digital literacy skills in
image creation, selection, content protection, creativity,
tagging and sharing. Kevin created an interactive,
informative presentation on one of our debate topics for the
Metropolitan Debate League. His resolution statement was
"NYC Bike Lanes Do More Harm Than Good."
http://www.thinglink.com/scene/370229006693302273.
Kevin won an IPAD mini for himself and a one-year database
subscription for the SOMS building. Teacher/advisor/ School
Library Media Specialist, Patricia Eyer said, “I am so
proud of Kevin. He is a self motivated, independent, hard
working student.”

SOMS Students Win Awards in AAA Safety Poster Contest
Two SOMS
students have just been announced as winners in the 2013
AAA Traffic Safety Poster & Video Contest.
Minji Kang has been chosen as the First Place winner for
Grades 6-8 and will receive an award plaque and a $300
check. Jessica Cascone has been chosen as a Merit Award
winner for Grades 6 – 8. Jessica will receive an award
plaque and a $50 check. Students in grades K - 8
illustrated posters in an assigned safety category,
under the supervision of their teachers. The contest
focuses on motivating students to adopt safer behaviors
in their own lives while continuing its primary aim of
reducing traffic and pedestrian crashes, one of the
leading causes of death for children ages 3 – 14. The
winning posters were selected from nearly 1,600 entries.

SOMS Initiates First Rockland County
Debate League
South Orangetown Middle School (SOMS)
Debate teams have been participating in
the NYC Metropolitan Debate League (MDL)
for middle school students since 2012.
They have now decided it was time to
bring a debate tournament to Rockland
County! Pioneered by School Library
Media Specialist, and Team advisor,
Patricia Eyer, (SOMS) had its first
annual Parliamentary-style debate on
Friday, June 7, 2013. An invitation to
the event was extended to all students
at SOMS interested in the art of debate.
Five teams of three students formally
participated in the tournament.
Five Tappan Zee High School students
volunteered to judge the event. All five
judges, Brian Shapiro, Lawrence Chillrud,
Julie Bartels, Livy Bartels and Sabrina
Rothchild were members of the 2012 SOMS
Debate Team. They judged and coached the
Teams through three rounds of debate. A
modified version of the American
parliamentary debate format was
followed. A round of debate consists of
2 teams of 3 members each competing
against each other for approximately 30
minutes. A list of four topics were
given beforehand, but only three were
actually debated at the event. Each
topic was revealed 15 minutes prior to
each debate. The topics debated were:
-
Ban genetically modified foods.
-
Non-U.S. born citizens should be
allowed to become president.
-
It should be illegal to sell coffee
and coffee products to minors
anywhere in the United States.
Awards were given to the top three
teams. The first place team was
comprised of: Jake Laddis, Mitchell
Jacobs, Sean Treanor. The second place
team was comprised of: Victor Tao, Ethan
Pusch, David Fowler and the third place
team was comprised of; Nika Colley,
Palak Oza, Cassie Bartels.
Any school interested in forming a
Rockland County Debate League team or
would like information about our school
event, should contact the SOMS Debate
Team coach, Patricia Eyer at:

Happy
60th Birthday Cottage Lane Elementary
On
Friday, June 7th, the staff and student body of Cottage
Lane Elementary gathered in the gymnasium to celebrate
Cottage Lane’s 60th birthday. Students had researched
and emailed former students, created a documentary
video, and constructed a mural to the school from the
class of 2013 made entirely of recycled plastic bottle
caps. A plaque that was recently discovered in one of
the hallways of the school, that had been presented in a
dedication to Cottage Lane Elementary 60 years ago, by
the then Board of Education was generously restored by
Nolan Monuments of Haverstraw, NY, and rededicated at
the celebration.
The assembly was followed with classroom visits by
alumni who answered questions posed to them by the
students. Then a giant Happy Birthday chorus and
cupcakes prepared by parents and PTA. |
