Dear SOCSD Community,
Over the last several months we have made various upgrades to
our District’s security system. We have installed security
cameras, restricted access to schools with multiple entrances,
established the protocol that buildings are to be locked unless
there is a security guard in the entrance area, upgraded
communication systems, and reviewed all of our building and
district crisis planning processes and drills. Some of this work
has involved the assistance of law enforcement agencies and
security experts.
In spite of these efforts, we had a security breach that
fortunately did not endanger students or staff. It clearly,
however, reinforced the importance of following our procedures
and ensuring that we never become complacent. We are once
again reviewing and reinforcing all aspects of our school
security. As a result, we will be making some immediate changes.
The key changes include but may not be limited to the following:
-
Entrances to schools will be locked at all
times with security using cameras and electronic releases to
open doors once schools are in session.
-
Visitors will be required to present
identification.
-
Additional security cameras will be
installed.
-
Access to buildings will be denied once
security has gone off duty and doors have been secured for
the evening.
-
When there are evening events, so that an
entire building will not be open and accessible, sections of
buildings will be secured.
-
The district will conduct unannounced
security audits.
While we understand the tightened security and
reduced access may be inconvenient, it is essential that we take
every reasonable measure to ensure that our buildings are
secured for the safety of our students and staff. Each school
will be providing information about ways in which these changes
will affect students and parents. Thanks for your patience and
understanding.
Sincerely,
Ken Mitchell, Ed.D.
