Mission Statement
The South
Orangetown Central School District is
committed to providing each student with ongoing opportunities and
resources to reach his or her full potential. Experiences that are
specifically directed to engaging and challenging gifted and
talented students should be an integral part of their learning.
Gifted
and Talented Review Committee Report
Goals:
-
To ensure that all of our students
have the opportunity to achieve their full academic potential.
-
To identify
students with high potential, and to inform parents and teachers
so the needs of these students may be met.
-
To provide staff
development and resources for our teachers so that they are
prepared to use effective strategies and provide challenging
learning opportunities for all students.
-
To offer a continuum of services for
the full range of our students’ abilities.
Services
Grades 1-3
The teacher of the gifted and talented works on varied
activities through whole class and small group instruction. At
times, students are cycled into groupings based on their
strengths and abilities as evidenced by their classroom
performance. These groupings are flexible and fluid reflecting
children’s growth and learning.
Grades 3 & 4
Identified children are ‘pulled out’ of their classrooms
once every six day cycle for a lesson with other students from
across the grade level. Pull-out eligibility will be based on
appropriate data (e.g. OLSATs) and evidence of creativity,
academic ability and performance.
Grade 5
Students identified for services at this grade level are pulled
out from class, approximately two times during a six-day cycle.
Grades 6-8
During Period 8, students have the opportunity to work with the
teacher of the gifted and talented in the areas of problem
solving, creative writing, and research. Students are also
afforded the opportunity for advanced study in the areas of:
Math, Science, Art, Music, and Technology.
Identification Process
- In keeping
with best practices in gifted education, SOCSD utilizes
evidence of academic and intellectual achievement,
behavioral characteristics, and student-generated work to
identify students for services starting at the end of grade
2.
- Grades 3-8 –
Nomination based on OLSAT results, Renzulli Scale, work
samples and academic performance.
- Cluster
Classes in Grade 3-6 — Children (generally the top 5%) are
clustered within classes based on performance and ability.
*Renzulli Scale — a
generally recognized rating scale to obtain teachers’ estimates
of student characteristics in the areas of learning, motivation,
creativity and leadership.
*Otis-Lennon School
Ability Test Scale — a generally recognized rating scale to
obtain teachers’ estimates of student characteristics in the
areas of learning, motivation, creativity and leadership.
Identification Time Frame
Students are identified each spring
for the following year’s services. At any time, teachers and/or
parents can nominate students for services.
